I replaced the thermostat on the 1985 Chrysler Town & Country 2.2L Turbo because it was overheating and the thermostat was a sensible first thing to rule out. The job took about 30 minutes, the new part went in without a fight, and the housing did not leak afterward. Unfortunately, the wagon still overheated and stalled.

That did not make the thermostat replacement pointless. It confirmed that the easy answer was not the whole answer and gave me a clean starting point for the cooling-system tests that followed.

Symptoms / reason for repair

The wagon was overheating and pushing coolant out near the radiator neck.
It was also stalling, so I needed to establish whether the cooling problem was part of a larger engine problem.
The thermostat was inexpensive and its age and condition were unknown.
Replacing it was a reasonable first repair before moving into deeper cooling-system diagnosis.

Parts & supplies

Thermostat: verified for the 1985 2.2L Turbo application.
Thermostat gasket: replace every time.
Coolant: enough to top off after the job is done.
Hose clamps: optional here, but old clamps love to become the difficult part of an otherwise easy job.
Shop towels: always many.
Catch pan: coolant can poison animals and people. Catch it, clean spills, and dispose of it safely.

Note to self: take photos before removing anything. Old hose routing and part orientation are much easier to remember when the evidence is still on the phone.
Step-by-step

The actual plan.

Step 01

Let everything cool completely.

Do not open the cooling system hot. Pressurized hot coolant is not cool.

Step 02

Disconnect the battery.

I disconnected it before working around the engine. On future drivability work, I will record any stored Chrysler fault codes before removing battery power.

Step 03

Place a drain pan under the work area.

Some coolant may escape. A cat litter pan works great in a pinch.

Step 04

Follow the upper radiator hose to the thermostat housing.

The housing should be where the upper hose meets the engine. Take photos before loosening anything. Whoops.

Step 05

Remove the hose and housing bolts.

Work slowly. If something feels stuck, take a beat before applying full noodle-arm strength.

Step 06

Remove the old thermostat.

Note the orientation before pulling it out. The replacement needs to sit correctly in the housing, regardless of how the old one was positioned.

Step 07

Clean the mating surfaces.

Old gasket material needs to come off carefully. The goal is clean and smooth, not “I attacked this with a chisel.” A clean razor blade on the surfaces should do the trick.

Step 08

Install the new thermostat and gasket.

Seat the thermostat correctly, place the gasket, and reinstall the housing evenly.

Step 09

Refill coolant and check for leaks.

Top off the system, remove trapped air using the correct procedure, and inspect the housing for leaks. If the temperature rises abnormally or coolant starts escaping, shut it down and let everything cool.

Step 10

Verify what actually changed.

The housing stayed dry and the thermostat replacement itself was complete. The overheating continued, which meant I had ruled out one simple possibility and earned myself a sequel.

What went sideways?

Honestly, nothing went sideways during the repair. It was one of the rare jobs that really did take about 30 minutes. The complication came afterward, when the same overheating and stalling symptoms remained.

Final result

The thermostat was replaced successfully, but it was not the cause of the overheating. The wagon stayed parked while I moved from replacing a likely maintenance part to testing the cooling system and the engine itself.

What happened next

The tests found a real problem in cylinder #1.

When I later pulled the spark plugs, all four were very dark and sooty. The firing tip of the #1 plug also had clear liquid on it, while the outside ceramic was dry. That was a clue, not proof of a failed head gasket, so I kept testing.

Cylinder #1: 61 PSI with the radiator cap installed and 61 PSI with it removed.
